The kitchen backsplash is where Moroccan Zellige shines most. It is water-repellent, easy to wipe clean, and its handmade glaze adds a warmth that tiles against every cooking splash. Here are our favorite ways to use it — from the classic white square to bold cobalt patterns.
The Classic: 5x5 cm White Zellige
The number-one kitchen choice is a simple grid of 5x5 cm Zellige in white or cream. Despite looking "plain", the handmade variation gives the wall a soft, textured light. Pair it with a color-matched grout for the cleanest look.
Cobalt Blue Navy Wall
Bold cobalt is the traditional Moroccan statement. A full cobalt backsplash with white grout creates a dramatic, jewel-box kitchen. Blue works wonderfully with brass or gold cabinet hardware.
Emerald and Mint Greens
Green is the color of Moroccan gardens and it pairs beautifully with wood counters. Deep emerald for a moody, rich kitchen, or mint for a lighter, retro-modern feel.
Hexagonal Honeycomb
Give the backsplash a contemporary twist with hexagonal Zellige tiles. The honeycomb geometry adds interest without pattern overload. A great choice for minimalist, art-deco or boho kitchens.
10x10 cm for Modern Minimalism
For broad open-plan kitchens, the 10x10 cm format covers large surfaces with fewer grout lines. Greige, sand or warm white tones keep the space calm and luminous.
Mixed Shade "Handmade Blend"
Order a blend of similar tones (for example cream, sand and light beige) and install them randomly. This recreates the authentic, naturally varied look of traditional Moroccan walls.
Add a Pattern Border
Frame the backsplash with a hand-cut border of contrasting tiles, or insert a small geometric medallion behind the hob. A little pattern goes a long way with Zellige.
From Hob to Ceiling
Take the Zellige all the way to the ceiling behind the stove. It protects the wall from grease and creates a beautiful, full-height focal point above the cooking island.
